Couch thief – Porthos

Nothing worse than having your spot on the couch stolen by a couch thief.

and then when you try and regain your spot you’re given the guilt trip.    Takes “puppy dog eyes” to an all new level.

Fine – I’ll have my morning coffee at the kitchen table.

Night Shooting with Illuminate Workshops

Earlier this month my wife and I took some time to go one a monthly photowalk that Efrain from Illuminate Workshops organizes every month free of charge.    This photowalk was down at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.

Despite the fact that I shoot professionally as a Denver wedding photographer, I still think it’s important to find time to shoot for fun and for creative exploration.   Besides often the things I learn shooting for myself are things that I can translate and use for clients in their wedding coverage.

Now while I’ve been to Garden of the Gods many times, it has been a few years, and I’ve never been there at night.   We did cut our stay short, something about 20 photographers with tripods and Porthos on a leash was a logistical error that I hadn’t ponder until I thought about how much damage he could do the first time a chipmunk caused him to make a full speed burst and the damage that would do to the good working relationship I have with my insurance agent.

Still we managed to grab a few fun shots.

And in case you’re thinking stuff like this isn’t doable without top of the line pro gear, this was shot on one of my old back up cameras, a canon Rebel, with a non-pro lens – and the most important tool, a tripod.

I hear rumors July’s night walk will be downtown and involve fireworks……….

Shave and a Haircut – 2 bits

OK, a few days ago I posted a before picture of how scruffy Porthos can get after just about 2 months in between clips, so just to show the difference here’s a few after pics.

Wedding Season 2009

The 2009 wedding season has begun and looks to be a wonderful year despite the overall economy. While our clients’ wedding budgets are tighter, we’ve been able to tailor packages to suit our clients’ exact needs so they’re only paying for what they want.

While dates are booking nicely we still have at least one opening each month for the rest of the year so your referrals are always welcome. If we are already booked on that day we have a referral list of some of the best wedding photographers in the state of all budget levels.

Anytime Sessions

With the focus on weddings in 2009 there’s been a few changes to our portrait offerings. While we still do single, family, senior and pet portraits we’re now calling these sessions, “Anytime Sessions” and treating them in much the same way we would an engagement session in that the goal is to capture this time in the subjects life and not just some pictures on a boring background.

The two levels of these sessions differ in the length of the session and the selection of final images. The session fees include a memory book and the ability to purchase prints at greatly reduced prices. Most clients have a set amount to spend on prints so our approach is to have them be able to get a large selection of prints instead of one or two for the same amount.

Check out the portrait information page on the blog for more details.

New Edition to the Family

There’s a new edition to the family you might have seen if you saw us at Furry Scurry, Porthos. He’s a six month old Bichon Frise (or bichin frizzy as I like to call him) . A great little guy who often hangs out at the studio with me. We’ve just finished “puppy pre-school” and will be starting obedience classes soon.

Classes at the MHP Studio

Since the bulk of my work this year has been outside of the studio I’ve been looking for someone to share the space with. It’s just a shame to have 1800 sqft or shooting and meeting space sitting empty most of the time.

I’m happy to announce we found the perfect match with Illuminate Photography Workshops.

Director Efrain Cruz has put together a great team of instructors covering everything from Digital 101 beginners classes to advanced photoshop.

Since most the classes take place outside of my normal studio time it’s been a perfect fit so far and I hope you’ll take a look at their class offerings for your own photography education.

22nd Anniversary and Porthos

As our 22nd anniversary showed up on the horizon my wife and I starting discussing what we wanted to do to celebrate. Since I’ve been dealing with a bad case of pneumonia this last month we really didn’t plan on doing much – hospital stays and frequent follow up visits along with recovery has been the big focus this month, however I am doing very much better now.

What we did discuss is the hole in our lives since we lost Luna, our white german shepherd who we both loved dearly just over a year ago. While Luna lived to a nice old age and had a good life, it’s been a tough year getting over that and getting ready to move one. Well we’ve decided to do that and to bring a dog into our lives.

While we loved our german shepherd, for this dog we took a lot into consideration, our lifestyles now, size of place, my slight allergies and researched the breeds for a bit before settling on a Bichon Frise. Yeah a lot more “foo foo” dog than the german shepherd was, but a dog well suited to our current life.

So without further ado I present the newest addition of the family, Porthos (from the Three Musketeers).

Since I had to swing by the studio to pick up a lens for an engagement shoot tomorrow we of course had to bring Porthos along to grab a few studio shots with him.
